Minerva’s Mentors

Every Student Deserves a Mentor
One of the most impactful ways alumni can give back to UNCG is by donating your time and expertise to current students. To help make this easier for our graduates, UNCG is partnering with Mentor Collective to offer current students the chance to learn from and connect with Spartan alumni like you.
There’s no cost to participate, and mentors can help students set and achieve goals, make connections, and prepare for their future career. Alumni will be connected with a UNCG student based on interests, area of study, needs, and preferences. Keep reading to learn more!
You might be wondering: “Me, A mentor? Are you sure?” The answer is yes!
Students need a nudge to act sooner rather than later. At a time when they need to consider where they’ll head after graduating, many are simply not taking those steps. Minerva’s Mentors are uniquely equipped to help empower their mentees to set and achieve goals – and those currently in the workforce are beautifully positioned to help with this. Mentorship creates benefits for mentors and mentees alike. Mentors experience benefits like expanding their own skill sets and professional knowledge, and are six times more likely to be promoted into a higher position. If you’re nervous about how you’ll do, please know that we provide all mentors with training, resources, and ongoing support to help them feel equipped to take on the immense but important challenge ahead.
Your next question might be: “What will I need to do?”
Mentors are asked to complete a brief matching survey, which offers insight required to make thoughtful and well-matched pairs. You’ll answer questions about your demographic identification, professional background, hobbies, and skills you’re willing to share. We use your matching survey to connect you with mentees, which can happen at any point during the academic year. Next, you’ll complete an online training that introduces mentors to the program platform, the philosophy that informs our approach to mentorship, and to other mentors embarking upon the journey with you. As a mentor, you’ll reach out to your mentee(s) and check in with them regularly. We recommend monthly, but you and your mentee can determine what frequency and method works best. The mentorship spans one year, and at the end, you’ll receive a LinkedIn Certificate to showcase proudly on your professional profile.
