Alumni awards Criteria

Listed below are the criteria by which UNCG Alumni Award nominations are judged. If you have any questions, please email alumni@uncg.edu. Current members of the Alumni Leadership Board and the awards and nominating committee may not be considered for the award(s).

NOTE: Self-nominations will not be accepted; family nominators must include a letter of recommendation (non-family).

McIver Lifetime Achievement Award

The UNCG Alumni Association established the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015 to recognize extraordinary accomplishments by an alumna/nus of UNCG. This award is the highest honor bestowed upon members of the UNCG Alumni community and recognizes those who have made significant professional achievements or have distinguished themselves through service to others.

  • The Award honors alumni who, over the course of their lives or through a singular achievement, have made significant contributions to UNCG and beyond.
  • Distinctive service may have been rendered on global, national, state, and/or local levels. Their achievements exemplify the spirit of the university’s motto of service and have brought great credit upon themselves and the university.
  • It honors outstanding lifelong achievement and service to the recipient’s profession and/or community/society/university.
  • It recognizes alumni who exemplify creative and continuous personal growth and a willingness to embrace our changing world

The Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to one alumna/nus annually. If a qualified candidate is not nominated, the award will not be bestowed. This award can be awarded posthumously.

Minerva Award for Distinguished Service

The Minerva Award for Distinguished Service recognizes the devotion, service, and visionary leadership of an alumna/nus given to UNCG, the UNCG Alumni Community, academic colleges or the UNC-Greensboro community at large.

  • The Award honors alumni who have made significant contributions in the spirit of the university’s motto of service. 

The Minerva Award for Distinguished Service will be presented to no more than three alumni annually. If a qualified candidate is not nominated, the award will not be bestowed. This award may be awarded posthumously.

WC Legacy Award

The WC Legacy Award will be given to alumni of either Woman’s College or UNCG. Emphasis will be placed on characteristics that were important during the WC era, which included service, social or political activism.

  • Recipients must be alumni of Woman’s College or UNCG
  • Award recognizes significant contributions in their lifetime that exemplify character and service, social and/or political activism

The WC Legacy Award will be presented to no more than three alumni annually. Each year, there will be a minimum of one recipient who attended Woman’s College (1934-1963.)  If a qualified candidate is not nominated, the award will not be bestowed. This award can be awarded posthumously.

Professional Achievement award

The Professional Achievement Award recognizes outstanding achievement in any professional field. The award is given to an alumnus/na with a record of notable career accomplishments and a history of outstanding contributions to their profession. These achievements have brought distinction to themselves, credit to the University, and benefit to their communities. 

  • The award recognizes exceptional achievement and significant contribution to the recipient’s profession or community/society or university.
  • The recipient must exemplify outstanding professional and personal development either through traditional channels or innovative approaches.  
  • The Professional Achievement Award can involve achievement in any of these categories: Business, entrepreneurship, innovation; public service, philanthropy, non-profit leadership, scholarship, research or academia.

The award will be presented to no more than three alumni annually. If a qualified candidate is not nominated, the award will not be bestowed. This award can be awarded posthumously.

Young Alumni award

The Young Alumni Award recognizes exceptional achievement and significant contributions made to the recipient’s profession, community, society or the university.  This award will be given to a UNCG alumna/nus who is 40 years or younger when nominated. 

  • Recipients must be 40 years or younger when nominated.
  • The Award recognizes professional and personal achievement and development, community (local, state, or national) and/or University service.

The Young Alumni Award will be presented to no more than three alumni annually. If a qualified candidate is not nominated, the award will not be bestowed. This award can be awarded posthumously.

Honorary Alumni Award

The Honorary Alumni Award is the highest honor bestowed upon loyal friends of The University of North Carolina Greensboro who are not alumni.  This award recognizes individuals who make meaningful contributions and show dedication to UNCG through their efforts or financial contributions.

  • Recipients do not possess an earned degree from UNCG and meet the following criteria:
  • Service and Support to UNCG: The recipient’s deeds and actions have a profound impact on supporting the University; its faculty, students, and/or alumni.
  • Recipients display an enthusiasm to share experiences to help publicize and promote UNCG on a local, state, or national scale.
  • Recipients demonstrate a high moral character that is in alignment with the mission and goals of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

The Honorary Alumni Award will be presented to one alumna/nus annually.  If a qualified candidate is not nominated, the award will not be bestowed.  This award can be awarded posthumously. In addition to the nomination, there must be one additional letter of support submitted.
