African Minerva: On the Origins of the Afro-Greco-Roman Goddess

A presentation and conversation about the African origins of UNCG’s Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, known to the Egyptians as ‘Neith’ and the Greeks as ‘Athena.’ Dr. Ali presents the archeological and historical evidence that points to the origins and evolution of this creator deity starting at Sais in the Nile delta as part of a richly connected ancient Mediterranean world.
Dr. Omar H. Ali is a historian and ethnographer of Africa and the global African Diaspora. He received his Ph.D. in History from Columbia University and is the author of over half a dozen books. With classical philologist Rebecca Muich, his latest book is Africans in the Ancient Mediterranean World, to be published in 2026.
