Spartans at Commencement with the Pass the Tassel logo superimposed on top.

At Commencement, new graduates celebrate their achievements and share victories with friends and family. They’ve made sacrifices along the way, whether that meant spending Friday nights studying or holding down a job to stay in school.

Each graduate deserves to walk across that stage, but for many Spartans, the full cost of official regalia gets in the way of their hard-earned recognition.

That’s why UNCG is making it easy for alumni to donate their used regalia so that future Spartan graduates can rent it with our new Pass the Tassel program. Because affordable regalia could be the difference between being celebrated on stage and sitting in the stands.

So, if you’ve “turned the tassel” in the last 10 years (Classes of 2015 – 2025), you can support your fellow Spartans this October.

  1. Bring your Commencement regalia to Homecoming 2025
  2. Find the clearly marked donation area on Academic Row (learn more at homecoming.uncg.edu)
  3. Leave your regalia with Homecoming staff

Supporting community members is the Spartan way, says Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Brett Carter: “It’s a great feeling when the UNCG alumni community comes together to support an initiative that provides regalia to students who can’t afford it due to their circumstances.”

Don’t have regalia to donate but want to help?

A gift of $30 to the Commencement Regalia Support Fund covers the cost of a cap and tassel for a fellow Spartan who is celebrating a major educational milestone. That means UNCG faculty, staff, alumni, friends, and parents can all help make a student’s Commencement dream a reality. Gifts can be made on-site at Homecoming or securely online.
